William stared at the floor.

“William?”

He looked up at the man sitting opposite him. Wearing an expression of defiance, he stood his ground. “Like I told you—I can’t say.”

His attorney let him finish as he leaned back in his chair and then forward again, placing his palms on the table. He spread his fingers apart, then brought them together again as he seemed to consider the best way to respond. “William, you do realize how bad it’s going to look if you continue to refuse to give the who, where, and what of your whereabouts last night. I hate to have to say it, but I’m afraid this tactic is going to invite more trouble than you’re looking for. ‘Trust me’ isn’t exactly an answer these guys buy into…”

William shook his head. “I know my rights, counselor. I don’t have to tell them anything I don’t want to. Besides, they don’t have anything on me. There’s no way they could.”

“In this case, unfortunately, I’m going to advise you— as your attorney—and also as a friend, that your cooperation is essential. The cops can either make this investigation go away quickly or they can and will make your life hell until you give them what they want.”

He shrugged. “I just don’t feel the need to say where I was.”

His attorney let out an exaggerated sigh. He started to speak and then hesitated. He removed his glasses, placed them on the table, and pinched the bridge of his nose between two fingers. “Then I’m going to have to ask you point blank if you have something to hide.”

William stood and walked to the floor to ceiling window, which overlooked the city below. He crossed his arms and pondered the best way to respond while he watched the hustle and bustle going on many stories down at street level. He took a deep breath in and let it out before answering. “I guess, technically, the answer to that would be yes—but it’s not what you think. I had nothing to do with that woman’s death.”

Finally, he turned to face his attorney and looked him straight in the eye.

The man seemed genuinely relieved. “I see.” He pursed his lips. “Or I think I do, anyway… let me put it another way then. Let me ask you this. Would this technicality be something you’re hiding from your wife?”

He frowned. “Something like that.”

The attorney nodded in understanding. “In that case, I hate to say it—but you need to talk to her. And you need to tell her the truth. Because I’m afraid that one way or another, it will inevitably come out. It always does.”

William nodded. “That’s exactly what I was afraid of.”
